She quit her place in the Panthers in 1969 and resigned from high school after attending Calumet High School, and Kenwood High School. (Now Kenwood Academy). She first began performing around Chicago in small bands, including her boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka got married to Hassan in 1970.
